Applying for Financial Aid
Step 1: Complete the FAFSA form on-line.
- All students seeking federal, state and institutional financial assistance including loans, grants, and work-study, must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
- The FAFSA should be filed electronically at www.fafsa.gov.
- The priority FAFSA filing deadline for the traditional undergraduate program fall semester is March 15.
- If you miss March 15, be sure not to miss the PHEAA grant deadline of May 1
- Awards will be made as long as funds are available. See the FAFSA tips for hints about filing the FAFSA.
- See - Common Errors when filing the FAFSA for more helpful information.
Step 2: After you receive your award letter in the mail, complete the reverse side and return your award letter as soon as possible. Before signing, be sure you understand:
- Loan Fees: Lenders charge a fee on Federal Student and Parent Loans. These fees are deducted before the loan disburses to the student’s account and are NOT reflected on the award letter. Check our loan page for the current fees.
- Academic awards have minimum GPA requirements for renewal. Check our grant and scholarship page for specifics.
Step 3: New Students Only, complete the Verification Process if indicated on the front of your award letter. On the bottom right side there is a small box that indicates whether you were selected or not selected
- If your letter indicates “Verification - Selected”, a verification worksheet has also been enclosed. Please complete and return it to our office along with other requested documents
Step 4: Read inserts included with your award letter about student loans.
Step 5: Visit these online calculators to fully understand the cost of the loans you are borrowing:
- www.finaid.org: general financial aid information, loan repayment calculators
- www.salliemae.com/plan: helps you create a plan to pay for your college degree and shows you what your loan repayment will look like
- www.youcandealwithit.com: has helpful loan repayment information, great calculators to estimate repayment and understand the interest
Step 6: Be sure that your bill is paid or loans approved before classes begin to avoid problems with check-in and registration. Also keep in mind the following:
- Book policy: It is best to save money for books before each semester. Your financial aid will not disburse until the start of each semester and it takes the Business Office a couple of weeks to process refund checks once a credit balance appears on your student account.
- Please see the Geneva College website for information about the refund/withdrawal policy.
Step 7: Please find the details of your financial aid award on our website: www.geneva.edu/fa. You are responsible to understand the information listed here.
