Geneva holds on against Penn State Beaver

Beaver Falls, PA – Geneva’s men’s basketball team will enjoy two weeks off before having to play its next basketball game. On Saturday afternoon, the Golden Tornadoes picked up a much needed victory before breaking for the Christmas holiday. Geneva moved to 7-5 on the season with an 80-68 victory over Penn State-Beaver. The victory dropped PS-Beaver to 4-8 on the year and it as the second victory for Geneva over the Lions this season.

Geneva led by as many as 18 points in the first half and ended the opening 20 minutes with a commanding 41-24 advantage. Shooting 50% in the first half and holding PS-Beaver to just seven field goals, Geneva overcame its inability to knock down a three-point field goal in the first 20 minutes.

The second half got much more interesting as the Lions rallied to cut Geneva’s lead down to only six points on two separate occasions, but could get no closer. With 1:40 remaining, the Lions cut Geneva’s lead to 74-68, but the Golden Tornadoes managed the final six points of the game to win by 12 points.

The duo of Greg McDivitt and Kyle McDermott combined for 45 points to control the post for the Golden Tornadoes. McDivitt was 12-13 from the field for a game high 25 points. McDermott, playing his first game after suffering a broken nose, scored 20 points on 6-7 shooting from the field. Jermaine Ferguson helped Geneva’s cause with nine points and a team high eight rebounds.

PS-Beaver was led by Zach Fetchin’s 20 points and 11 rebounds. Raymont Edmonds and Delon Bournes each added 14 points in the loss.

“We were fortunate again today,” said head coach Jeff Santarsiero. “Our post guys picked us up again this afternoon and it was a good thing because that Penn State team just keeps coming at you. Coach Williams does a great job with that team and they just keep getting better.”

Geneva will enjoy some holiday time off before heading to Kentucky to play in the Centre College Tournament on December 29-30. The Golden Tornadoes won’t return to Metheny Fieldhouse until they meet Point Park University on January 11th in an AMC North meeting.
