Hill's storybook ending rims out, Geneva falls to Seton Hill

Beaver Falls, PA – It may have reminded some people of the ending set by Hollywood in the movie “Hoosiers”. Geneva’s Brian Hill had been knocking down three-point field goals all night and with one more at the buzzer, he would have sent Geneva’s men’s basketball team home on a winning note. Unfortunately, Hill’s storybook ending jumper at the buzzer hit the back iron and Geneva lost at Seton Hill 72-70. The loss dropped Geneva under the .500 mark to 8-9, while Seton Hill improved to 7-6.

Geneva built a five-point lead, its biggest of the night, at 67-62 with 2:32 left in the game on a tip dunk from Kyle McDermott. Seton Hill scored the next five points to tie the game at 67-67 with 1:24 left in the second half. After Bryan Hill’s reverse lay-up gave Geneva a two-point lead with just over a minute to play, Seton Hill’s Zarko Kostic drilled a three pointer to give the Griffins the lead back with 58 seconds left. Justin Nardi made one of two free throws to tie the game, which set up Seton Hill’s Marcus Thompson to drop in the game winning jumper from 18 feet with just under ten seconds left. Hill got a good look at the basket in the final seconds, but was unable to convert for the victory.

Despite the miss at the end of the game, Hill brought Geneva back with a team high 19 points, including five three-pointers for the second consecutive game. Jermaine Ferguson scored 18 points on 8-12 shooting and also picked up a team high 11 rebounds. Seton Hill got 19 points each from Thompson and Jordan Thomas. Thomas scored 15 of his 19 points in the second half.

Geneva shot an impressive 58% from the field, but lost to Seton Hill for the eighth consecutive time in the all-time series with a victory.

The Golden Tornadoes will get back into AMC North play with three conference games next week. Geneva will travel to Daemen College on Tuesday night before returning home next weekend for games with Houghton on Friday and Roberts Wesleyan on Saturday.
