Big Apple turns sour, streak halted at eight

Rochester, NY – Geneva’s women’s basketball team has only lost twice in its last 17 games, both of which have come in the state of New York. In search of a school record ninth consecutive victory on Saturday, the Golden Tornadoes saw their streak come to an end at the hands of Roberts Wesleyan by the score of 65-62. The loss severely hurts Geneva’s chance at an outright divisional championship as the Golden Tornadoes dropped to 10-2 in the AMC North and 19-4 overall. Geneva is now two full games behind undefeated Daemen with two games remaining on the regular season schedule next week. As for Roberts, the Raiders improved to 12-14 overall, including a 4-8 record in the conference. The loss may take on added significance with Roberts Wesleyan moving into fifth place in the conference, which could very well set up a rematch between these same schools in the first round of the American Mideast Conference tournament.

On Saturday afternoon, Geneva took a 30-24 lead into the halftime locker room, but watched the Raiders out score them 41-32 in the final 20 minutes. Roberts Wesleyan turned the tables on a very stingy Geneva defense by allowing just ten second half field goals and shooting 49% from the field on offense. Roberts Wesleyan also controlled the glass with 15 offensive rebounds.

Geneva was led by an outstanding effort from Renee Rawding, who did most of her damage from the foul line. Rawding finished the game with 22 points, including a 15-17 effort from the charity stripe. Allyson Clarke picked up her second double-double on the weekend trip with 13 points and 13 rebounds before fouling out for the first time all season.

In a game that featured eight ties and 16 lead changes, it was Roberts Wesleyan that was standing at the end. Although the loss is damaging to Geneva’s conference title hopes, the Golden Tornadoes must stay afloat for their most difficult week of the season. Geneva will travel to Notre Dame next Wednesday before closing out the regular season next Saturday at home against first-place and undefeated Daemen College.
