AMC North Champs Open Regional Tournament With a Win
Mt. Vernon, OH – Geneva’s baseball team isn’t satisfied with its first AMC North title in school history. On Tuesday morning, the Golden Tornadoes opened their play-off run with a 2-1 victory over Rio Grande in a first round game of the NAIA region 9 tournament. The victory improved Geneva’s overall record to 29-18 and helped the Golden Tornadoes move on in the winner’s bracket. Geneva will face the winner of Ohio Dominican and Malone on Wednesday morning at 10 am.
Dave Foss has been perhaps the most pleasant pitching surprise of the season. On Tuesday, Foss continued his outstanding year with his seventh victory of the season against just two losses. Foss pitched 8 1/3 innings to give the Golden Tornadoes an opening round win. Geneva’s closer, Justin Montgomery, came on to record the final two outs for his 8th save of the season.
Offensively, Geneva got a pair of sacrifice flies from Tyler Kepiro and Rob Arata, which turned out to be the only offense it would need. Rio Grande’s only run came in the eighth, but a pair of double plays along the way helped Foss and Geneva maintain its lead throughout the game.
The winner of the region 9 tournament will move on to a Super Regional best of three series next week for the right to go on to the College World Series in two weeks.
Geneva was named a Christian College of Distinction, affirming the school’s dedication to high quality academics founded on the inerrant truth of God’s word.
