After decades of praying, years of planning and several months of construction, detours and skillful labor, the current phase of the Beyond the Bend project is nearing completion. Road crews have begun laying asphalt on the new road, one of the final steps in bringing the new stretch of Route 18 to life.
“If all goes well, they should have the paving portion of this project done by the middle of next week,” says Geneva president Dr. Kenneth A. Smith. “Indications are that the paving will be completed shortly, which was the big concern with regard to keeping this project—and next year’s project calendar—on schedule.”
A few more steps—including a new traffic light—still need to be put into place, but this segment of Beyond the Bend is wrapping up. Instead of snaking through the campus, Route 18 will pass by Geneva, making foot traffic through the campus much safer for students, faculty, staff and visitors.
