WOMEN FINISH SEVENTH STRENGTHENED

BY FIRST PLACE FINISHES FROM FLETCHER AND VANREGENMORTER

Washington, PA – In the second track and field competition of the spring, Geneva’s women again led the way for the Golden Tornadoes’ squad. Geneva’s women picked up 45 total points and finished seventh out of 15 schools at the Washington & Jefferson Invitational. Conversely, the men’s team did not score a point on the day.

While the lone bright spot for the men’s team was Dan Dillman’s pair of top 20 finishes in the discus and shot put, the women’s team featured several outstanding performances.

Leading the way on Saturday were Susan Fletcher and Rebecca VanRegenmorter, who each came back home with first place finishes. Fletcher led a huge field in the 3000 meter steeplechase with a winning time of 12:04.41. Teammate Marsha Miller finished fifth in the steeplechase with a time of 13:05.84. The other top performance for the Golden Tornadoes was turned in by Rebecca VanRegenmorter with a first place finish in the 5000 meter race. VanRegenmorter crossed the line in a time of 19:09.50, while teammate Beth Bartolomeo also scored with a seventh place finish in 19:36.65.

Kelsey Anderson was busy for Geneva throughout the day with three top ten finishes in separate events. Anderson finished 10th in the pole vault, fifth in the javelin and was very impressive with a fourth place finish in the 100 meter hurdles with a final time of 16.87.

Geneva’s middle distance runners controlled the 1500 meter race with three runners finishing in the top seven positions. Laura Seyler led the charge with a fourth place finish, while Nicole Okerlund was 6th and Sarah Davis finished seventh. Finally, Kathleen Bolton finished 10th and Julie Everett 12th in the women’s 400 meter race.

Geneva’s track and field team will be back in Beaver Falls on Wednesday when they host a quadrangular meet against three other schools from the Presidents’ Athletic Conference.
