SEASON OPENS WITH 1-2 START AT PS-BEHREND TOURNY
Erie, PA– What turned out to be a long first day of the 2008 season for the Geneva women’s tennis team started with great promise. After taking the first match of the Penn State Behrend Tournament 4-1 over Bethany, the Golden Tornadoes dropped a pair of 5-0 decisions to the host PS-Behrend and Fredonia, NY.
Geneva picked up singles victories from Chelsea Cover, Kara Zimmerman and Jill Grabski to decide the match against Bethany. In doubles, Maura McLaughlin and Bethany Ragonesi gave the Golden Tornadoes their fourth point of the match. Cover had to battle for an 8-6 victory in number one singles while Zimmerman cruised to an 8-2 decision in the number two slot. McLaughlin and Ragonesi pitched a shut-out in an 8-0 whitewash.
Matches two and three turned out to be completely different stories as none of the young Geneva squad could muster a victory against both Behrend and Fredonia. Ragonesi came the closest in number four singles as she dropped an 8-6 decision in the Behrend match.
The Golden Tornadoes will head right back out on the road on Monday to face Chatham University. Geneva will open its home schedule on Saturday in a rematch against Chatham.
