Geneva Runners Continue to Improve and Impress

Waynesburg, PA – The goals remain simple for the Geneva College men’s and women’s cross country teams when it comes to head coach Brian Yowler. He simply demands continued improvement across the board from each individual and each team. Yowler continues to get what he is looking for as both teams continued to progress on Saturday at the Waynesburg University meet. The Geneva men’s team finished third overall behind only first place Carnegie Mellon and second place Grove City. On the women’s side, the Golden Tornadoes finished fifth out of ten schools.

Nick Edinger once again ran a solid race with a 14th place individual finish with a time of 27:21. Although it was a bit slower than last week, it was still over a minute faster than his time on the same course a year ago. Teammate Jon Shope continues to improve with a 16th place finish in a time of 27:27 which was also the fastest 8K time for any freshman in school history. Rounding out the top five runners on the men’s side were Owen Struck, Ryan Thorn and Jacob Beschner.

Six of the eight Geneva women ran a faster time this week than they did a week ago. Anayna Merkle led the way with a 14th place finish in a time of 24:53, less than a half second ahead of teammate Shannon Rech in 15th place. Encouraging each other throughout the race, Merkle and Rech went head to head for almost the entire distance of the course. Their finishing times were 42 seconds ahead of Rech’s finishing time a year ago at Waynesburg. Julia Urbanski, Sarah Davis and Samantha Miller each finished in Geneva’s top five.

The Golden Tornadoes will enjoy a weekend away from the course before getting back into competition on September 25th at Saint Vincent College.
