Geneva Puts Stronghold on First Place in PAC

Beaver Falls, PA – Much was riding on Thursday night’s volleyball match at Metheny Fieldhouse. The top two teams in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference hooked up in a first place showdown featuring 13-1 Geneva College and 11-2 Bethany College. Bethany handed Geneva its only conference loss earlier in the season. On Thursday night, the Golden Tornadoes turned the tables and took a firm grasp on first place with a 3-1 victory over the Bison. The victory was Geneva’s seventh straight as it improved to 19-7 overall including a 14-1 mark within the PAC.

Geneva took a huge step forward in pursuing the school’s first ever regular season conference title in the first year of eligibility. With only three conference matches remaining, the Golden Tornadoes could lock up the title with a pair of victories on Saturday at Metheny Fieldhouse.

Geneva was again featured an amazingly balanced offensive attack with five players posting at least eight kills. Kristland McCracken led the charge with 16 kills with teammates Maggie Bowersox (13), Rachel Kuegler (12), Ashley Davis (11) and Erin Smith (8) all making significant contributions.

The Golden Tornadoes won the first game of the match 25-19 before watching Bethany come back to tie things up with a 25-16 win in game two. Geneva cruised in games three and four by scores of 25-19 and 25-15. Sophomore setter Deanna Briody posted an impressive 50 assists to average 12.5 per game. Brianna Mixter, the PAC leader in digs, came up with a team best 39 digs in the victory. On the service line, McCracken was impressive with four service aces.

Geneva enacted some revenge against Bethany who had beaten Geneva earlier in the season. Thursday night’s victory pushed Geneva two games ahead of the Bison and clinched at the very least a first round bye in the PAC tournament. Geneva will host Westminster and Thomas More on Saturday and a pair of victories would clinch the regular season title and the top seed in the tournament which begins on November 1st. The Golden Tornadoes close out the regular season next Thursday at Chatham.
