Geneva Takes Two From Defending PAC Champs

Bethany, WV – The last time the Geneva College softball team boarded the bus it returned home with a pair of losses at Saint Vincent College. On Wednesday, the Golden Tornadoes reversed their fortunes with a doubleheader sweep of their own over defending PAC champion Bethany College. Geneva cruised to a 9-3 victory in game before holding on for a 2-1 win in the night cap. The sweep moved Geneva’s overall record to 18-12 overall and 6-2 in conference play.

After Geneva spotted Bethany a run in the first inning of game one, the Golden Tornadoes stormed back with one in the second and three more in the third. Lori Deem got Geneva on the board with an RBI double in the second inning. In the third, Christina Fuqua doubled in a run which was followed by an RBI single from Ashley Davis. Davis scored on a Bethany error to give Geneva a 4-1 lead. Three more Geneva runs crossed in the fifth highlighted by a pair of bases loaded walks. In the sixth, Lori Deem launched her first home run of the season and Martha Adams followed with her third dinger of the year in the seventh. Deem finished 3-4 on the day to lead a nine-hit attack. Andrea Hinds also had a pair of knocks in game one. Julie DiLonardo went the distance for the victory in allowing three earned runs on seven hits. DiLonardo struck out four in game one.

DiLonardo was even more impressive in the night cap. She allowed just one unearned run in the first inning to earn her 16th victory of the season. She gave up just two hits and struck out three for the victory. She allowed just two base runners after the third inning. Offensively, Geneva got both of its runs in the bottom of the first. Martha Adams scored on a throwing error and Christina Fuqua’s RBI single turned out to be the ultimate game winner. Geneva managed only four hits in game two.

The Golden Tornadoes will look to extend their season long four-game winning streak on Saturday when the visit Thiel for a 1 pm doubleheader. The Golden Tornadoes return home next week with four games against Houghton on Monday and Tuesday as a part of the NCCAA East Regional tournament. Geneva gets back into PAC action on Wednesday when it hosts Westminster at 3:30 pm.
