Beaver Falls, PA – Coming off a disappointing conference doubleheader loss to Thiel on Saturday, the Geneva College softball team quickly rebounded with a pair of wins on day one of the NCCAA East regional softball tournament. Hosting Houghton College in a four-game series with the regional champion being determined by run differential, the Golden Tornadoes took a huge step in securing an automatic bid to the NCCAA national tournament. Geneva defeated Houghton 10-0 in five innings and 10-2 in six innings to take a commanding advantage in the East Regional tournament. The doubleheader sweep pushed Geneva’s overall record to 20-14 with another twin bill scheduled with the Highlanders on Tuesday at 1 pm.
After a scoreless first inning in game one, the Golden Tornadoes posted a four-spot on the board in inning number two. Julie DiLonardo knocked in a pair of runs on a single which was followed by a two-run base hit from Andrea Hinds. Geneva posted single runs in the third and fourth inning before closing the game out with four runs in the fifth before the game was called due to the mercy rule. Geneva’s four-run fifth inning was highlighted by a game ending three-run homer from Christina Fuqua. Geneva banged out 11 hits including three from Fuqua and two each from Hinds, DiLonardo and Ashley Ritchey.
DiLonardo went the five innings in earning her 17th victory of the season. She allowed just two hits and struck out five in the victory.
Geneva picked up 11 hits in game two as it posted another ten spot on Houghton. It was the Highlanders who opened the scoring with two runs in the top of the first. The Golden Tornadoes responded quickly with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Christina Fuqua knocked in a pair with a triple and then scored on a bunt base hit from Martha Adams. Geneva’s four-run third was highlighted by a two-run double from Toni D’Urzo. Andrea Hinds went the distance in earning her third victory of the season with her first career complete game. She allowed two earned runs on five hits. Hinds struck out seven in the victory.
Following tomorrow’s conclusion to the NCCAA East regional, the Golden Tornadoes will get back into conference play on Wednesday when they host first place Westminster in a doubleheader scheduled for 3:30 pm.
