Athletes Honored for Record Setting Performances

Beaver Falls, PA – It was a very impressive first week of action across the Geneva College athletic department. Record setting performances became the norm for a few student-athletes and the Presidents’ Athletic Conference and the NCCAA (National Christian College Athletic Association) took notice when it came time to announce player of the week honors.

Three Geneva student-athletes received PAC Player of the Week honors, while the NCCAA also handed out three national awards to Geneva student-athletes. Zack Hayward was named both PAC offensive player of the week and NCCAA national player of the week for his record setting performance at Frostburg State last Saturday. Hayward completed 39-49 passes for 535 yards and seven touchdowns in Geneva’s 56-53 loss to the Bobcats. Hayward broke single game records for completions, yardage and touchdowns. He also ran for 39 yards just for good measure.

Geneva’s newest cross country duo of Nick Edinger on the men’s side and Sarah Noel for the women each took home PAC weekly honors for victories at the Westminster Invitational. Edinger, who broke the 8K school record with a time of 25:45, was also named NCCAA men’s runner of the week. Edinger took home first place at Westminster and helped his Geneva teammates do the same for the overall finish. Noel, who was competing in her first collegiate meet, crossed the line 58 seconds before the next closest competitor with a time of 24:00 flat. Her effort was the sixth best 6K time in school history.

Finally, Geneva’s volleyball team was a perfect 4-0 over the weekend at the Gettysburg Tournament. Deanna Briody was named NCCAA national volleyball player of the week for her role in the victories. Briody, the defending PAC player of the year, started the 2012 season with 111 assists in ten sets. She also had ten service aces while posting 41 digs in just three matches.
