The clear winner for the month of March was the weather. The spring athletic teams were forced to dodge rain and snow for most of the month and are now hopeful things will turn around as April is now upon us. The baseball team ended the month with a bang as it picked up its first conference victory of the season. While the baseball team completed a three-game series with Washington & Jefferson, the softball and track teams continued to sit and wait for sunny skies.
Geneva opened the conference schedule last week with a doubleheader loss at Washington & Jefferson. After falling 10-0 in game one, the Golden Tornadoes suffered a hard luck 3-1 loss in the night cap. Geneva was bit by the error-bug in both ends of the doubleheader and it was a pair of unearned runs in game two that proved to be the difference. Mike Jeffreys continued to be dominant on the mound with a complete game three-hitter but it wasn’t enough for the Golden Tornadoes. Geneva got some revenge on Saturday as junior hurler Caleb Kilgore pitched Geneva to its first conference victory. Kilgore went six innings and scattered six hits while allowing just one earned run. TJ Lambert came up with a pair of hits and three RBI to lead Geneva’s ten-hit attack. The Golden Tornadoes begin a busy five-game week with an overall record of 6-9 and a conference mark of 1-2.
Geneva’s softball team had three doubleheaders wiped out because of the weather last week. The Golden Tornadoes continue to sit at 6-8 overall with the beginning of the PAC schedule set for later this week. The Golden Tornadoes have three conference doubleheaders scheduled this week with the conference home opener set for Wednesday against Saint Vincent.
Geneva’s track team took the Easter weekend away from competition to get some much deserved rest and relaxation. The Golden Tornadoes will be back in action on Saturday at Mount Union.
