Saturday Poem / Searching

Saturday, July 09, 2011
By Eugene Jannuzi, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

I looked for you all day today,
Just as I looked for you all yesterday,
Just as I have in times long past.
But your image stunts and tricks and hides
In a cruel stabbing trompe l'oeuil.
Where will I find you? When?
I looked in vain in the morning sun.
You were not in the restless leaves of the trees
That danced and glistered and wondered with me,
Or in the laughs and shouts of children at play.
I searched in the bird-call obbligato,
In the light-dappled afternoon street,
In the soft sighing wind,
The far mower moan,
In the words of the songs we used to sing,
In the empty seat of the car you drove,
In all the good times together we shared,
In the days of our years now cut off, flown.
All I have found is a vacant sorrow.
If I don't find you as I sleep
I'll look for you again tomorrow.
