MLK Week 2010
Geneva College will celebrate the legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during MLK Week, January 18-22, 2010. This annual event is an opportunity for students, faculty and staff not only to reflect on Dr. King’s vision, but also to gain a deeper and more faithful understanding of cultural, racial and ethnic issues.

Rutha Harris, Featured Performer
The Sons of Thunder, Special Guests
7 p.m. Skye Lounge
Rutha Harris, civil rights activist and a member of the original Freedom Singers will offer a stirring performance from a wide repertoire of songs, including those that she sung as a member of the Freedom Singers. The Sons of Thunder, a talented and well-known a cappella group from the Beaver Valley, will also perform live prior to Ms. Harris. Both events are free and refreshments will be available.

Dr. Todd Allen on “The Civil Rights Movement as a Calling”

Geneva’s weekly Chapel service will be led by Dr. Todd Allen, chair of the Department of Communication. Allen has a special interest in the Civil Rights movement and is the director of The Common Ground project, a small, community-based non-profit that sponsors an annual Civil Rights bus tour.

Faculty, staff and students are invited to come out to view the movie that follows the last days of Martin Luther King Jr.'s life through the eyes of the Rev. Billy Kyles.
Friday, January 22
MLK essay contest winner
10:10 a.m. Skye Lounge
Geneva is sponsoring an essay contest to recognize and to honor the legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. First, second and third place cash prizes will be awarded.
All entries must be submitted in hard copy form to Ms. Cindy Cook or to Dr. David Guthrie, no later than Tuesday, January 12, at noon.
The first-place winner will have the opportunity to present his or her paper to a gathered audience, followed by a brief response from a panel of faculty and students.
