Music Business

Purpose: preparation to work in music wholesaling and retailing, personal and concert management, etc.

Students experience a blend of music theory, public relations and business courses preparing them for work in the industry.  Additionally, students can experience the Contemporary Music Center Program, in Martha’s Vineyard, MA, gaining experience in a community for young musicians and aspiring music executives to plumb the depths of their creative souls and test the waters of a career in popular music.

Program requirements:
16 hours in music theory and aural skills (108, 109, 128, 129, 208, 209, 228, 229)
Eight hours in music history and literature (210, 310, 311)
10 hours in ensembles (eight in large ensembles, 212, 213, 215; 2 in small ensembles, 214, 21 6, 218)
Three hours in acoustics (PHY 160)
Eight hours in applied music lessons (two of which may be class lessons)
Piano proficiency, level I (normally one to four credit hours)
18 hours of business (140, 310, 311, 320, 330, 417)
Six to nine hours of accounting (151; either 152 or 255)
Six hours of economics (201, 202)
Two hours of public relations (COM 1 80)
12 hours in music business (MUS 201, 301, 495, 493)

Total: 42—46 in music, three in acoustics, 30—33 in BUS/ACC/EC( two in public relations, 1 2 in music business, and 40 in core requirements not included in the major. Total hours 129—1 36.

There are additional proficiency and program requirements:

  1. Passing piano proficiency level I. MUS 106, 107 are provided to help students meet this goal. 
  2. Passing two credits in class lessons in instruments (MUA 153, 154, 155, 156, 157, 193, 254, 255, 257), which may be counteded toward the applied music requirement. 
  3. Passing participation in at least one ensemble each semester (as explained above). 
  4. Passing performance in at least one student recital per semester, and before the Board each semester, while studying privately. 
  5. Passing prescribed attendance at recitals and concerts on campus.
