Meet the Coach

Bret OtteBret Otte – Cross Country and Track and Field (Men and Women)

Since 1998 one name has been consistent within Geneva’s track and field and cross country programs. Bret Otte has taken both programs to new heights and he continues to work hard to develop perennial powerhouse programs in both track and cross country.

Otte has seen his women’s cross country team twice ranked in the NAIA top 25 in the last three years, along with several national cross country qualifiers to the NAIA national meet. In track, records continue to fall at a staggering rate on both the men’s and women’s side. The highlight of Otte’s career came in 2003, when he led the women’s track and field team to the school’s first American Mideast Conference title. This past spring saw a record nine athletes qualify for the NAIA national track and field meet.

Otte’s coaching career began after he graduated from Calvin College with a degree in physical education. He then received his Master’s Degree from Central Michigan University. During his several coaching stints, Otte has coached both national and international athletes. In fact, he studied with National Coaches of Canada prior to joining Geneva’s staff.

Specializing in sprints, hurdles and jumps, Otte has managed to guide his teams to over 100 school records in both indoor and outdoor track and field during his six year stint. Less than ten records remain on the men’s side since Otte took over in 1998.

Along with his extensive coaching duties, Otte teaches in Geneva’s physical education department. Otte has also served several of Geneva’s other athletic programs in the areas of weight training and fitness.
