Opening Academic Convocation

Dr. Robert Frazier speaks at academic convocation.

New and returning students were welcomed back for the spring semester at the Academic Convocation held in Metheny Fieldhouse on Friday, January 14. This event is “a time to focus on and celebrate the academic life of the campus,” says Dean of Faculty and Administration Dr. Terri Williams.

Provost Ken Carson provided the introduction for the convocation. “One way to characterize our mission at Geneva is that we want to help students learn how to love God with their minds,” said Dr. Carson. “The primary purpose of this academic celebration is to remind ourselves of this high calling.”

The gathered community honored student excellence in academic achievement during the convocation. Dr. Williams invited recipients of National Merit, C.M. Lee, Presidential and Trustee scholarships and Dean’s List students to stand and be recognized. Students who are members of the honors program and those who received commencement prizes last spring were also commended. Members of the national honor society Alpha Chi, drawn from the top 10% of juniors and seniors who are admitted by invitation, were introduced by the organization’s Co-President Debbie Drake.

Professor of philosophy Dr. Bob Frazier presented the message, “Recovering Wonder.” In his speech, Dr. Frazier attested, “Wonder is central to wisdom.” By recovering our sense of wonder, we “encourage the wisdom required to worship God aright and love Him supremely.” Dr. Frazier is the chair of the department for core studies and received the Excellence in Scholarship award in 2009.
