Todd Allen to participate in Yale seminar

Todd Allen

Yale University has invited Dr. Todd Allen, chair of the communication department at Geneva College, to participate in a seminar on Slave Narratives from June 13 to 16. Through a highly competitive and intense selection process, Allen was one of only 28 faculty members selected to attend.

“It is a privilege and an honor to have been selected for participation in this prestigious seminar,” Allen says. “I view this as a tremendous learning opportunity through which I can enhance my scholarship in the African American freedom struggle.”

Leading the event will be Professor David Blight, professor of American history at Yale and director of the university’s Gilder Lehrman Center for the Study of Slavery, Resistance & Abolition. Blight is one of the nation’s top scholars on the Civil War and its legacy.

Before the Civil War approximately 65 narratives were published in English, many of them now classics by such authors as Harriet Jacobs, Solomon Northup, and William Wells Brown. This seminar will examine both antebellum and postbellum slave narratives, both as works of literature and as means of understanding the slaves’ personal experiences in the transition to freedom.
