Allen receives Men of Excellence Award

Todd AllenGeneva College’s Todd Allen was among 50 men honored by The New Pittsburgh Courier for their professional excellence and devotion to the community in 2009. Allen, chair of Geneva’s Department of Communication, was named one of the Courier’s Men of Excellence at the newspaper’s November 19 ceremony.

“It was very humbling being awarded by such a prestigious journal such as The New Pittsburgh Courier,” says Allen. “To be recognized among top scholars and professionals is a great affirmation of the continuing struggle for equality in all aspects of American life.”

Creating the Common Grounds Project in 2002, Allen founded the nonprofit organization to teach the history of the Civil Rights Movement. The small, community-based organization supports “Returning to the Roots of the Civil Rights,” an annual bus tour that travels to the locations of key events in the movement and expresses their historical significance.

Because of his devotion to his students and continuing work in the community, Allen has been awarded much recognition throughout his career. These include the NEH Fellowship for African American Civil Rights Struggles in the Twentieth Century through Harvard University, the YWCA of Greater Pittsburgh Racial Justice Awards, the Civil Rights Humanitarian Award, and the Beaver County Peace Links Award.

The New Pittsburgh Courier is one of the nation’s oldest and most prestigious black newspapers in the United States. Since 2003, the Courier has given the Men of Excellence award to African Americans who impact their communities and inspire lives.
