    Larry Bruno

Doris Nevin

Former Geneva coaches Lawrence F. Bruno, Sr. and Doris E. Nevin were recently called into the loving care of their Heavenly Father. Both Mr. Bruno and Ms. Nevin made a significant impact on athletics at Geneva College.

Lawrence “Larry” Bruno died on Friday, December 24, 2010. Mr. Bruno, a former star running back whose football jersey number is one of only three retired by Geneva, served the college as an assistant football coach from 1985-94. He was drafted by the Steelers in 1947 but, instead, dedicated himself to a career of coaching at Monaca and Beaver Falls High Schools and Geneva College. In 1960, Mr. Bruno led the Beaver Falls Tigers to a WPIAL football championship with quarterback Joe Namath. In 1985, Namath chose Mr. Bruno to present him when he entered the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Doris “Dorie” Nevin died on Friday, December 31, 2010. Ms. Nevin was both a teacher and coach at Geneva from 1949-61 and served as the Director of Physical Education for Women. She coached many sports including women’s basketball, and is considered a pioneer in both women’s athletics and physical education at Geneva College. Geneva presented Ms. Nevin an Honorary G in January 2010 to recognize her contribution to Geneva athletics.
