Geneva Across America is underway

gaa-map-3.jpgAfter two years of preparation, the Geneva Across America adventure, through which members of the Geneva College community are participating in a transcontinental bicycle trip, is finally underway. Starting with back tires in the Pacific Ocean, the cycling team pulled out of San Francisco, CA on the morning of Monday, May 20, 2013. By the time the journey ends in the Atlantic Ocean in Lewes, DE, on July 26, the riders will have pedaled 3,708 miles through 13 states

Those interested in following the members of the team can track their progress at www.geneva.edu/gaa. IMG_20130520_073949_746.jpgThe purpose of Geneva Across America is to represent the college across the country while raising as much as possible for a new endowed scholarship for future Geneva students in need of financial assistance. Already, the effort has generated over $40,000 for the scholarship.

Team members include: Geneva alumnus Jim Andrews ’76, Director of the Pisgah Program Becky Case, alumnus Bob Collins, Director of Academic Counseling Center and Educational Support Services Christy Coulter, wife and parent of Geneva alumni Linda gaa_logo.pngGardner, friend of the college Ed LeNormand, Dean of Student Development Mike Loomis, and alumnae Fiona Smith and Laura Zerbe.

The group will be joined by various “tag-along” riders throughout the trip, as well as a number of people who will take part in “Cycle to the Sea,” which is the final leg of the trip from McKeesport, PA, to Lewes, DE.

In addition to promoting Geneva and raising funds, these cyclists are biking to experience a cross-country adventure in a unique and challenging way, and to develop community fellowship and spiritual growth.

“We are engaged in an epic adventure, but it’s an adventure with a purpose,” says Geneva’s Dean of Student Development Dr. Mike Loomis. “The cost of higher education is outpacing America’s ability to manage the expense. Our desire is to ride and raise important funds for a new endowed scholarship that will assist needy students realize the dream of higher education.”
