Filmmaker Gregg Helvey to visit Geneva

Greg HelveyOscar nominated filmmaker Gregg Helvey will visit Geneva College on Wednesday, November 16. He will speak during chapel at 10:15 a.m. in Metheny Fieldhouse. At 7 p.m. in Skye Lounge, Helvey will host a screening of the award-winning film Kavi, which he wrote, directed and produced.

Kavi won the 2009 Student Academy Award gold medal in the narrative category. The movie was filmed entirely in India and depicts modern day slavery. It tells the story of a young boy who wants to play cricket and go to school, but is instead forced to work as a slave in a brick kiln. Kavi was also nominated in 2010 for Best Live Action Short Film, and has won 60 awards at over 110 festivals worldwide.

Helvey’s films are characterized by a passion for social justice along with powerful story telling. His projects include National Geographic and BBC1 documentaries, as well as independent fictional films, and he has worked in countries such as El Salvador, China, Kenya and England.

The filmmaker’s other award-winning documentary is Overexposed, which examines how pornography affects men.

Helvey received an M.F.A in film production from the University of Southern California’s School of Cinematic Arts, and bachelor of arts degrees in English and French from the University of Virginia.
