Post-season picture becoming clearer for Geneva hoops

gt_logo.gifBeaver Falls, PA – Geneva’s men’s and women’s basketball teams knew coming into the 2007-08 season that neither would be eligible for the NCAA post-season or the Presidents’ Athletic Conference tournament. Because Geneva is only a provisional NCAA member, the Golden Tornadoes are not yet eligible to compete in post-season. That is of course except for the NCCAA (National Christian College Athletic Association). Both Geneva teams have qualified for NCCAA post-season and the play-off picture is becoming clearer with each passing day.

Geneva women’s post-season path has been finalized. The Golden Tornadoes, who just completed their second consecutive 20-win season at 20-5, will open the play-offs on Thursday night at Metheny Fieldhouse. Geneva will welcome old-time AMC foe Mt. Vernon Nazarene University to Beaver Falls with a 7 p.m. tip-off in the NCCAA Eastern Regional semi-finals. The Cougars enter the post-season with an overall record of 17-11. The winner of Thursday night’s game will advance to the regional finals against Roberts Wesleyan on March 8. The regional champion will get an automatic bid to the NCCAA national tournament in Oakland City, IN on March 13-15.

The men’s picture is not as crystallized. While the path to the men’s national tournament for Geneva may also go through Mt. Vernon Nazarene, the Golden Tornadoes are forced to play the waiting game as the Cougars are getting set for the AMC tournament. Should Mt. Vernon win the AMC tournament or receive an at-large bid to the NAIA nationals, Geneva would advance directly into the NCCAA national tournament without having to play a game. However, should the Cougars not make the NAIA national tournament, the Golden Tornadoes would then be forced to host Mt. Vernon on March 8 to determine the Eastern Regional representative at the NCCAA national tournament in Oakland City, IN on March 18-20.
