National Day of Prayer

National Day of Prayer - Thursday, May 6, 2010

Geneva College and McCarl’s will host a prayer breakfast to observe the National Day of Prayer. The breakfast will be held at Geneva College in Alexander Dining Hall Thursday, May 6 from 7:30 to 9 a.m. The keynote speaker will be the Honorable George E. James, Beaver County Judge.

Several community leaders will participate in the program including Pastor Ric Raines, Fairview Reformed Presbyterian Church; Reverend Larry Elenbaum, Christ Presbyterian Church; Kitty McGraw, Freelance News Writer, WBVP; Reverend Lee Bittner, Medical Center Chaplain; and Reverend Keith Black, Raccoon United Presbyterian Church.

The breakfast is free and open to the public. A free-will offering will be taken to support two local non-profit ministries, Tiger Pause Youth Ministry and Pine Valley Bible Camp.

The annual National Day of Prayer was first enacted in 1952 by a joint resolution by Congress and signed by President Truman. In 1988, the law was amended and signed by President Reagan, permanently setting the day as the first Thursday of every May. Each year, the president signs a proclamation, encouraging all Americans to pray on this day. The National Day of Prayer breakfast hopes to celebrate and continue this tradition.
