Students serve local community

Over 500 Geneva College students will participate in community service projects during orientation week in an event known as “Our Town” on Saturday, August 28. The projects take place throughout the Beaver County area, providing freshman and transfer students an opportunity to better understand and connect with their new community.

The projects include doing clean up, landscaping, painting and small repairs at local churches, facilitating an annual picnic with Big Brothers Big Sisters, working at a community playground, leading games at a community fair and more.  Partners in this project include College Hill Anglican Fellowship, Beulah Baptist Church, Chippewa UMC Youth Ministry, Tiger Pause, the Salvation Army and Pine Valley Bible Camp, among others.

Students will begin the day with a devotion from local pastor Rev. Chris Noyes of First Presbyterian Church in Beaver Falls. Afterwards, the students will disperse to serve at more than 20 sites in the area.

It is estimated that the service completed will be the equivalent of 2,048 hours, which is comparable to $14,848 of labor at minimum wage.

Projects are coordinated by Missy Davis, Assistant Director of the Center of Faith and Practice at Geneva College.
