Paul Smith

Faithful servant Dr. Paul E. Smith went to be with his Lord on Monday, June 13, 2011. He was a dearly loved teacher, mentor and friend who will be missed by many in the Geneva community and beyond.

A professor of English at Geneva College from 1966 until his retirement in 2005, Dr. Smith was the chairperson of the English department for nearly 15 years and was awarded Emeritus status upon retirement. Dr. Smith taught over 40 courses, including world literature, freshman and advanced composition, American literature, humanities courses, Renaissance literature, and Native American literature. Following retirement, he worked for Geneva on a part-time basis as faculty development coordinator.

Dr. Smith earned an Artium Baccalaureatus in English in 1960 from Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and a master’s degree from Bowling Green State University in Ohio. After some doctoral work at the University of Wisconsin, he received his Ph.D. in English from the University of Pittsburgh.

Prior to joining the Geneva faculty, Dr. Smith taught high school in Appleton, Wisconsin from 1964-66. He was also a lecturer at Bowling Green State, Calvin College and the University of Wisconsin.

He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Romaine Jesky-Smith, Chippewa Township; a son and daughter-in-law, Christopher Paul Smith and wife Tina; two daughters and sons-in-law, Amy Fattibene and husband Richard, and Sara Locke and husband James; a sister, Alyce Jean Peterson and husband Richard; eight grandchildren, and his beloved mother-in-law, Helen Jesky.

Visitation will be held Thursday, June 16 from 6–8 p.m. and and Friday, June 17 from 2–4 p.m. and 6–8 p.m. at Lutton Chippewa Funeral Home, located at 117 Blackhawk Road, Beaver Falls, PA 15010.

A service will be held on Saturday, June 18 at 10 a.m. at the College Hill Presbyterian Church with the Reverend Denni Burnett officiating, followed by interment in Mount Olivet Cemetery in Hopewell Township.

Contributions in Dr. Smith’s memory may be made to either the Catholic Hospice, 6200 Brooktree Road, Suite 220, Wexford, PA 15090 or the College Hill Presbyterian Church, 3400 Fifth Ave., Beaver Falls, PA 15010.
