Geneva Softball Claims First PAC Title

Latrobe, PA – It was far from an offensive showcase, but the for the Geneva College softball team it couldn’t have been any sweeter. The Golden Tornadoes claimed their first ever Presidents’ Athletic Conference tournament crown on Friday thanks to a 1-0 victory over Thiel College in the championship round. Geneva managed just one hit but it was enough to help push the only run of the game across the plate in yet another pitcher’s duel for the Golden Tornadoes. With the victory, Geneva advances to the NCAA regional tournament next week at a site and time to be determined on Monday. The Golden Tornadoes moved their overall record to 30-17 for the season as they reached the 30-win plateau for the first time in six years.

2012 PAC Champs

Julie DiLonardo claimed the PAC tournament MVP to nobody’s surprise. DiLonardo capped off a brilliant tournament with her tenth shut-out of the season. DiLonardo yielded just three hits and struck out eight in claiming her 26th victory of the season.

With the game scoreless into the sixth inning, Geneva struck for the only run of the game. After a walk to Christina Fuqua, Ashley Davis came up with the only base hit of the game that moved Fuqua to third base. One pitch later, a throw from the catcher back to the pitching circle ended up in centerfield and Fuqua came across for the only tally of the game.

DiLonardo allowed just one hit after the first inning and faced two batters over the minimum in the finals six innings. Along with DiLonardo, Geneva’s Ashley Davis, Christina Fuqua and Martha Adams were all named to the PAC All-Tournament team. “I couldn’t be more proud of a group of young ladies than I am right now,” said head coach Van Zanic. “This has been a special group all season and they are so deserving of being named conference champions. It is a distinction that will stick with them for the rest of their lives.”
