STEM Day

Nick Bloom '10 address the STEM Day participants.Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Day brought prospective students interested in these areas of study and their parents to Geneva College on Friday, October 22. Over 120 students and parents had the opportunity to tour Geneva’s campus, meet with coaches and club sponsors, discuss college majors and career paths and learn what the STEM departments have to offer.

Visiting students interacted with current students while participating in hands-on activities in the field of their choice. The Chemistry Department, for example, presented a forensic activity in which students utilized tests to measure density and water-solubility to identify an unknown liquid. Those interested in engineering were able to choose between building an electronic circuit, creating and testing a structure built from simple materials and designing a device to clean water.

While the students were experiencing Geneva’s lab facilities and equipment, their parents were learning about Geneva’s academics, the intricacies of financial aid and student development.

Parents were also able to ask alumni Matt Tyson ’87 and Nick Bloom ’10 questions about the STEM programs. Both graduates were able to attest to Geneva’s high academic standards. When asked how Geneva rates against other institutions offering engineering degrees, Matt answered, “In the field, Geneva is well-known.”  Nick highlighted the Christian development provided, as students “focus on being disciples of Christ first.”

Beth Ann Mine, Office of the Career Development Staff Specialist, offered a parent’s perspective on Geneva and its faculty. “My two children absolutely love their professors,” said Beth Ann.  “Professors here make such a difference in our children’s lives.”

The students and parents who visited during STEM day were able to see the difference Geneva makes first hand.
