Raised by missionary parents in Cambodia, this 1969 graduate of Geneva felt a call to medical missions at a young age, after witnessing an injured man die alongside the road in Cambodia. He studied pre-med at Geneva and graduated from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.
In 1977, he and his wife, a nurse whose parents were also missionaries, moved to Gabon, Central Africa to do medical work for the Christian & Missionary Alliance. The couple helped to turn a small dispensary into the Bongolo Hospital, a full service, 158-bed teaching hospital that has served tens of thousands of patients.
In 1996, Dr. Thompson helped to establish the Pan-African Academy of Christian Surgeons (PAACS), an international organization dedicated to developing quality training programs in general surgery at Christian hospitals in Africa. He currently serves as the PAACS Director of Africa.
He has written three books: On Call, his autobiography; Beyond the Mist, which tells the story of the church in South Gabon; and The Hand on My Scalpel, a collection of stories from his work as a medical missionary.
Dr. Thompson’s free, public events at Geneva include speaking during weekly chapel at 10:10 a.m. in Metheny Fieldhouse and speaking at 7 p.m. in Skye Lounge of the Student Center on "How God Uses Ordinary People to Do Extraordinary Things," followed by a question and answer session.
His other engagements include a lunch with Geneva faculty; and a dinner with missions, pre-med and biology students.
