Dr. Jean Twenge will speak on Thursday, November 11 at 7:30 p.m. and Friday, November 12 at 10:10 a.m. in Skye Lounge of the Student Center as part of the Colloquia Series hosted by Geneva College. Dr. Twenge will discuss her work pertaining to trends among current high school and college students. On Thursday, she will present “The Narcissism Epidemic: What’s Happening to American Culture?” Her Friday presentation is entitled “Generation Me: Understanding Today’s Young People.”
Dr. Twenge is an author, speaker, professor and consultant whose work focuses on the differences among generations. She holds bachelor and master’s degrees from the University of Chicago and received her doctorate in psychology from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor in 1998. Dr. Twenge joined the faculty of San Diego State University in 2001, where she serves as a social psychologist.
Dr. Twenge has written two books, Generation Me: Why Today's Young Americans Are More Confident, Assertive, Entitled — and More Miserable than Ever Before and The Narcissism Epidemic: Living in the Age of Entitlement. Her work is based on the findings of over two million student surveys on self-esteem, narcissism, anxiety, depression, expectations for the future and other traits, attitudes and behaviors.
Geneva College hosts the Colloquia Series each semester to encourage students and the community at large to evaluate the problems and challenges of the world with wisdom and Christian principles. The speakers for the series come from around the world to discuss compelling and provocative sociocultural, scientific, religious, literary, educational, political and economic ideas and practices that shape the world. The Colloquia Series is open to the campus community and the public at no charge.
