Geneva College is pleased to present The Vivian Davidson Hewitt Collection: A Multicultural Legacy. The exhibit is a gallery of the more than 40 works of art that Dr. Hewitt and her late husband, John, donated to Geneva over the course of many years. The collection will be on display in the upper level of the Student Center in Skye Lounge on January 19-21, 2011. Dr. Vivian Hewitt will also be speaking on January 20, 2011 at 7:30 p.m. in Skye lounge as part of Geneva’s Colloquia Series.

The artwork in the gallery could previously be seen in McCartney Library, Alexander Hall and various faculty and staff offices throughout the campus. Among the paintings on display is Alberoi Bazile's The Funeral. This painting is known for its colorful street and rural scenes and shows a contrast to our normal view of an impoverished Haiti. The collection also has American paintings such as Don Davey’s Chinatown and San Francisco Bay Bridge. In addition, English paintings such as William Palmer Robin’s Acquisition and Butchery Lane will be displayed.

The Hewitt’s private collection is considered one of the most comprehensive and significant anthologies of African American artwork assembled. It is now housed at the Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts and Culture in Charlotte, N.C. and considered a public treasure.

The exhibit will be open to the public:
January 19, 6 – 8 p.m.
January 20, 8 a.m. – 9 p.m.
January 21, 8 a.m. – 12 p.m.

Tickets for the lecture, available for no cost, are required and may be reserved by calling 724-847-5559 or emailing cynlcook@geneva.edu.
