August 1, 2011A New Academic Year
There was nervousness and excitement in the air at the Summer Previews held in mid-June as the campus community welcomed new students and their families. The student development staff is in the midst of training and orienting more than 100 student leaders and putting the final touches on new student orientation that will begin in just a few weeks. Geneva is pleased to announce the addition of new concentrations and majors. Chemical and environmental engineering concentrations have been added as part of our Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) accredited program. New concentrations offered in our business department include international business, management and entrepreneurship, and sport management. In compliance with new standards from the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE), the education department now has majors in Pre-Kindergarten to 4th grade, 5th to 8th grade and meets the new special education requirements. And the Biology Department has developed a new major in Environmental Science. We will be welcoming new full-time faculty to Geneva this fall. Gordon (Gordy) Richards has been teaching part-time at Geneva while serving in the military. He is completing his doctoral work at Robert Morris University and retiring from the military. Following a nationwide search, Gordy accepted a full-time teaching position in Geneva’s business department with a focus on quantitative methods and information systems. Dr. Mario Oyander and Dr. Anthony Comer will be joining the engineering faculty. Dr. Oyander has a doctoral degree in environmental engineering from Florida State University. He has taught and worked in the engineering field in his native Chile, as well as Tennessee and Peru. Following a significant tenure with BP, Dr. Comer has completed his doctoral work at the University of Kentucky and will have a particular focus of chemical engineering. Lots of exciting things are happening on campus. This list is not intended to be comprehensive, simply to give you a glimpse of the ways that God is blessing Geneva College. We look forward to welcoming the students back to campus this fall. Congratulations to the Baja Team for their strong showing at this year’s competition in Peoria, Illinois. The Biology Department announces a new B.S. in environmental science. Discounted tickets for the concert in Pittsburgh are available for the Geneva community.

While the commencement celebrations are my favorite time of the year, the start of a new academic year comes in a close second. Although the campus is quieter during the summer, faculty and staff have been busy preparing for this new year.
