December 2010A Message from President Smith
As I reflect on the completion of the fall semester at Geneva, I am reminded of God’s provisions for our community. We have been blessed with a sizable student body that is committed to their studies and to their spiritual growth. Students are being challenged to master the concepts and applications in their chosen disciplines. They are learning about God’s creation of every aspect of this world and learning how their faith matters to all that they do and learn. God has richly blessed us with a community that provides spiritual encouragement and support for every student. Professors are not only teaching a class of students—they are mentoring individuals who are and will be making a difference in the communities where God calls them to worship, live, and work. The staff of the Center for Faith and Practice, resident directors and assistants, and discipleship coordinators are gathering students to study the Bible and to hear God’s voice through their study of His Word. Quest is planning trips over spring break for students to live out their faith in communities that are hard hit by poverty and hopelessness. Weekly chapel programs give us an opportunity to praise God together as a community. A favorite Bible passage of mine is Psalm 144. David sings about the blessing that God can provide to our sons and daughters. In it he says, “Then our sons in their youth will be like well-nurtured plants, and our daughters will be like pillars carved to adorn a palace … Blessed are the people of whom this is true; blessed are the people whose God is the Lord.” It truly is a blessing to be a child of God, and this we pray for every student who is called to Geneva College. As we celebrate Christ’s birth, it is a time to reflect on God’s plan for eternity. Christ came to this earth to live and to die and to conquer death so that we might live. May our lives reflect the great love that God had for us in sending His one and only Son to save us from our sins and reconcile us to Himself.

As president of Geneva College, I pray for God’s blessing on each of you during this holiday season. While we celebrate the completed work of Christ throughout the year, this is a time when many around the world gather with their families and friends to celebrate Jesus’ birth.
