An Overview of Geneva's
Business Department

by Dr. Gordon Richards

Dr. Gordon RichardsThe Department of Business, Accounting and Management at Geneva College takes its role in the development of Christian business practitioners very seriously. The integration of faith and learning is central to our curriculum. We recognize and cherish the indivisible union between our faith and our vocation. Through a carefully crafted program of study in accounting or business with concentrations in management and entrepreneurship, marketing, finance, human resource management, international business, management of information systems, sports management, economics, or aviation, we prepare our students to carry their faith and the truths revealed through the inspired word of God into the marketplace.

Luke 12:48 says that from everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded. The faculty members of this department have been given much. Some of us come here after full careers in industry or government, but all come here with considerable experience in their field. All told, the nine full-time faculty members of the department have a combined experience of more than 150 years! Each of us has been given much in our respective areas of work and study, and we have come here to share what we have learned because the Lord demands much of us. We have all been called here to serve the students of Geneva, and through that calling, serve the Lord.

We challenge students through rigorous classroom study, including the use of several computer simulations across several disciplines beginning in the second quantitative analysis class. It is used again in several other courses, and they finish their senior year with a capstone simulation in strategic management, pulling together everything they have learned throughout their time at Geneva. In this course, students are formed into teams, and the simulation requires them to operate an airline and compete against each other. They make decisions about aircraft, routes and fares, along with many other variables. The simulation changes market conditions, and they must respond to prevent disaster or to maximize opportunities. Progress is reported back to the faculty through scheduled board meetings, which can be very intimidating to some, but prove to be valuable learning opportunities for all.

In an effort to remain relevant, the department has chartered an advisory council. Business leaders from across the country who share our Christian worldview volunteer their time to work with the department to maximize our curricular effectiveness.

A further measure of assurance of quality is provided by the program-level accreditation earned through the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP). All undergraduate and graduate programs within the department are accredited by ACBSP.
