A Message from Keith Martel, Director of Campus Ministries

Keith Martel, Director of Campus MinistriesIn the early 90s, I packed my bags and left Massachusetts for Beaver Falls. As a new believer in Christ, I was pretty certain that I needed to go to a Christian college — to shield my freshly-forgiven self from the world. But when I got to Geneva College, I realized that my faith had to be challenged in order to grow.

The purpose of Geneva’s Campus Ministries Office is not to create a shield for students, but to guide them on their journey of faith. Through discipleship, mentoring, Bible study, outreach and service, we engage students in their understanding of God’s Word and His world; care-filled love of neighbor; active disciple-making; and a thoughtful embrace of their calling as students. Through everything we do, we encourage our students to step out in faith.

Discipleship and mentoring

Our office oversees discipleship coordinators — designated student leaders in each residence hall who encourage students to become more Christ-like though mentoring, Bible studies and prayer groups. Another group of student leaders provides monthly all-campus programs in the areas of discipleship, service and missions.

The Campus Ministries Office also offers a mentoring program. Students are matched with faculty or staff members who can encourage them to grow in their faith.

Outreach and service

Geneva College is committed to serving and learning from our community and our world. This year, 50 students will be traveling to Aliquippa, Pa., Washington, D.C., Los Angeles, New Orleans and Mexico for various ministry and educational experiences.

Students-in-Service (SIS) is a group of student leaders who organize and implement service opportunities for the Geneva College community. Students may volunteer to help in building and renovation, mentoring and tutoring, senior ministries and social action.

In addition to these campus ministry programs, there are a variety of student-led Bible studies, ministries and fellowship times on campus.

Scripture rarely tells us that we are going to be “safe.” In Luke 9:23-24, Jesus said, “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will save it” (Luke 9:23-24). My hope is that our campus ministries staff will both challenge and encourage your students as they grow in faith, build relationships, engage the culture, and serve here and everywhere.

Students in action.

From Audrey Joseph

“Geneva recognizes God’s purpose to use humble and willing people to transform and redeem all aspects of the world for His own glory. Rather than isolate Christians into their own social spheres, Geneva trains young people to interact with the world with godliness and wisdom.”
