Geneva softball gets win, loses second game to bad weather in Florida Baseball team also idle

gcsoftball13346.jpgWINTER HAVEN, FL – Just like people, softball teams go to Florida to get away from the bad weather. It didn’t work Wednesday, though, as the Golden Tornadoes had to play through a rain delay in a first game to thump Albion 8-1 and had the second game against Wheaton postponed.

“It was nice to put a complete game together with solid pitching and timely hitting,” said Geneva head coach Van Zanic. “Hopefully, we can build some momentum with the win.”

In the win, Geneva broke open a 1-1 game with a seven-run fourth inning as the Golden Tornadoes had seven hits in the inning. Mackenzie Kemerer (Freedom) put the Golden Tornadoes ahead with a two-run bases-loaded single Ashley Davis (Springfield Local, OH) had two hits in the inning.

The 11-hit attack was led by Dayna Hicks (Blackhawk), who had three hits and scored twice while Christina Fuqua (Richard Montgomery, MD), Laura Beck (Canfield, OH), and Davis each had two hits. Fuqua had three runs batted in and Andrea Hinds (Montrose, PA) allowed just four hits and struck out six in six innings.

The baseball team did not see action, either.

The softball team will return to action Thursday – weather permitting - with games against Marietta College (OH) and Beloit College (WI).
