Netherland Selected as Presidents’ Athletic Conference Volleyball Player of the Week

vball-rachelset_PAC.jpgBeaver Falls, PA – The Geneva College women’s volleyball team enjoyed one of the most exciting weeks in recent history. The Golden Tornadoes closed out the regular season with victories over Chatham and previously undefeated Bethany to extend their current winning streak to eight matches. A big reason for the recent success was due to the play of sophomore outside hitter Rachel Netherland (Central Valley H.S.). As a result of her outstanding play last week, Netherland was named the Presidents’ Athletic Conference player of the week.

Netherland stepped into the setter position in a three-set victory over Chatham to open the week. In the win, she contributed 20 assists, five kills and a service ace. Saturday, Netherland continued her strong play in helping the Golden Tornadoes upend first place Bethany College.  Netherland smacked down 15 kills in 26 swings while only giving up two errors for an incredible .500 hitting percentage. Protecting the net from the Bison, Netherland assisted on six blocks. She finished the week with a .468 hitting percentage, averaging 2.86 kills a set.

Netherland and the rest of her Golden Tornadoes’ teammates will open up PAC post-season on Friday evening when they face the winner of Tuesday’s quarterfinal match between Grove City and Thomas More. Geneva will open play on Friday at 8 pm at Bethany College. Top seed Bethany will face the winner of Westminster and Washington & Jefferson in Friday’s other semi-final match at 6 pm. The championship match is scheduled to begin at 4 pm on Saturday with the conference champion receiving an automatic bid into the NCAA national tournament.
