Ed Lum - Physics & Applied Math Major

Ed LumWhat is ICP-AES (Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectroscopy)? Not only can Geneva College student Ed Lum tell you how this chemical technique detects trace metals, he can also show you how it works. The chemistry department acquired a spectrophotometer in 2008, and Ed had the opportunity to set up the equipment over the summer. A transfer student, Ed is new to the Geneva College community, and this was just one of the experiences that has led to dramatic, positive changes in Ed’s life.

When Ed applied to Geneva College, he was not looking for liberal arts education, let alone one that approached life and learning from a Christian perspective. He comes from an atheistic background and never really explored the implications faith could have on his life.

As a transfer student, Ed immediately enrolled in some of the general education classes that are required for graduation. One of these classes was an introductory Bible course. Looking back on this class and his other initial experiences at Geneva College, Ed says, “This was where I really had my first spark from the Lord. I didn't quite realize at the time but I was slowly changing. I started looking around at the people who I was with and wondering why these people are so nice, friendly and happy.”

Ed’s started a search for Christ that extended beyond his time in the classroom. He began to attend Bible studies on his residence hall floor and talk to his friends about Scripture. In the midst of supportive Christian community that he found at Geneva, Ed says that he found a peace he hadn’t felt before. “I was content and happy, which was something that was really unfamiliar to me. I had never lived with a truly Christian family before. Suddenly, I knew why everyone was so nice and happy. It was because they had the peace of the Lord dwelling inside of them.”

This realization led Ed to what he says was the most amazing moment in his life — making a commitment to Jesus Christ. It was through the love shown by faculty and staff that led Ed to search for purpose in life. It was through the community at Geneva College that God did an amazing work in his life. And it is through the integration of faith and learning that Ed continues to develop his gifts and pursue his calling.

“Before Geneva, I was pretty good at math and physics, but I really wasn't sure what I was going to do with those skills. I really was unsure about my future, probably because I was trying to be in control of it. Now coming to the Lord, I have faith about my future. It’s in His hands, not mine. I feel now that I am more prepared for the future. It is through Geneva the Lord did his work on my life. No other institution would have been able to do that.”
