Emily Stains - English Education Grad
Just a month before graduating last May, English education major Emily Stains ’07 accepted what she describes as an “amazing” teaching position at a top-ranked high school in Richmond, Va., where she instructs both ninth-graders and Advanced Placement English 12 students. “To teach at a high school of this caliber and be given the opportunity to teach elevated levels of English is certainly the answer to my prayers,” Emily says. “God revealed to me very early on that I would be a teacher and that teaching is my spiritual gift.” Emily follows in the footsteps of her mother, an adjunct English professor at Penn State Altoona who instilled early in her a passion for English and a love of learning. As Emily puts it, teaching is in her genes. Leadership opportunities at Geneva that have helped Emily stretch her mind, hone organization skills and practice her “teacher voice” included spearheading the English Club and Sigma Tau Delta and also working as a teaching assistant, tutor and junior admissions counselor. She also points to her adviser and professor, Dr. Lynda Szabo, as key to her growth. “She was an excellent role model who demonstrated how to really teach the content and show compassion to all students,” Emily says.
