Erin (Liggett) Stamile - Psychology Grad

Erin_Stamile.jpgIn a field like psychology, the proverbial Christian fish often swims upstream.

The current that is modern culture with all its secular theories and practices is a strong one. But by studying psychology from a Christian perspective at Geneva, Erin (Liggett ’07) Stamile has become an equally strong swimmer.

“I have grown immensely since I came to Geneva as a freshman,” Erin says. “I've been challenged to really know my faith and beliefs and have learned to defend these against those of contemporary culture, to bridge the gap between my personal convictions and the sometimes distorted studies of science.”

Like her fellow psychology majors at other colleges, Erin has learned the theories and the minds that produced them, the disorders and their causes, the anatomy of the brain and its still-mysterious functions. The difference is that she’s not just memorizing lists and taking tests; she’s also using what’s taught in her classes in her daily life.

After graduation from Geneva, Erin worked as a residential advisor for Life Management Consultants, serving in a group home with mentally retarded women. She credits her preparation for such a job to her experience at Geneva.

“In my abnormal psychology class, I learned a lot about serious issues that even students around me face, such as depression, bipolar disorder and anxiety,” she says. “But it has also helped me immensely as I now am working with individuals with special needs. I further understand their conditions and how I can help.”

Erin also acknowledges the role of Geneva’s faculty and staff in her accomplishments.

“Those who work at Geneva have taken great interest to see the students here succeed,” she says. “I owe much of my success to professors and deans who have called on me to do things that I would have never imagined doing on my own.”

Those things include being a resident assistant in the residence halls, developing retreats for her classmates, enhancing certain programs at Geneva and speaking at a variety of campus engagements.

“Geneva’s leaders truly work to build up new leadership,” Erin says. “They opened doors for me to do internships and independent studies that interested me and, because of their willingness to help, I have been able to do things that will truly help me in my future career.”
