Choosing a college is hard enough, but being stuck deciding between two schools only three weeks before the start of the fall semester is definitely a nerve-wracking situation. And this is exactly the circumstance in which Zach Kiger found himself. Fortunately, the strong Christian community and excellent programs found at Geneva College helped make the decision easier.

Zach knew he wanted to go to a Christian college, but one of the deciding factors in choosing Geneva was the coaching staff. He was an athlete growing up and wanted to continue playing varsity basketball in college. Zach says that Coach Santarsiero had a major impact on his college decision because he made him feel welcome, and also helped him to see the close-knit community Geneva offers. He also felt more comfortable with the campus and liked the people because everyone seemed friendly and supportive.

Having a strong education program also influenced Zach’s decision because he is majoring in elementary education and special education. “The elementary education department is great. The professors do everything they can to make you feel at home and to lend a helping hand,” says Zach. “They recently started a dual certificate program where graduates become certified in both elementary education and special education, which will be really helpful when searching for a job.”

Zach knows that he wants to take the special education route because he loves being able to teach special needs students. He had the opportunity to shadow a class at Beaver County Christian School, which made him realize exactly what he wanted to do with his life. He also believes that the students have the ability to teach valuable lessons to the teachers as well, and he wants to be in an atmosphere where the kids feel safe and have fun being educated.

Zach also believes that being a part of the Geneva community has helped strengthen his relationship with Christ, and has made him a better person in life.

“I'm quiet in my faith, and I'm usually not the one to stand up and talk or preach about what I believe in,” says Zach. “However, Geneva is making me more comfortable in doing so, and providing me with the knowledge needed to survive and prosper as a Christian in the real world.”
