February 5, 2008

Tom Pyle called the meeting to order at 9:31 p.m. on Tuesday, February 5, 2008, and he opened in prayer. Nate Davies and Katherine Bull were absent. 

1) Minutes: Ashley Luciano moved to pass the minutes of Tuesday, January 22, 2008. Lindsay Moore seconded the motion. Motion passed 8-0-1. 

2) There is an all GCSU meeting Friday, February 15, at 10:10 a.m. in the offices. 

3) Dorm Updates:

a. Pearce — John Bennett: The dorm purchased the 42’ TV in time for the Superbowl, and there was a positive student response. The dorm is working hard to recycle throughout the building. Building team meetings are now held weekly. 

b. Memorial — Garrett Marvich: There was a building team meeting held last week in which the leadership discussed expectations for the Spring Semester. 

c. Clarke — Meg Diemer: The newsletters were posted throughout the building, and residents were excited about the possible proposals for the semester. Many residents have organized bible studies in the dorm. 

d. McKee — Ashley Luciano: McKee and Memorial organized the black-and-white ball, and there seems to have been good feedback from the event. The building team is planning an entire building event for sometime before Spring Break. 

e. Young North — Josh Gmys: Recently the dorm had a building team meeting and split into groups to discuss lounge improvements, dorm pride clothing, and potential activities. 

f. Young East — Bonnie Rapp: There has been no building team meeting yet for the semester. The dorm is interested in getting a new TV for the lounge. Tom Pyle recommended that Bonnie talk to Residence Life and see if they could purchase one for the dorm. 

g. Arms Men — Conlan Walsh: There were a lot of Superbowl parties hosted in the apartments. There is a building team meeting February 13.  He is looking into a potential “Gladiators Competition”.  

h. Arms Women — Lindsay Moore: The newsletters are up. Many girls are gathering to go to “UpperRoom” on Thursday evening for the guest speaker.  

i. Houses — Nate Davies: Absent

j. Commuters — Katherine Bull: Absent

4) Proposals:

a. “Painting Party for Clarke Lounge”: Megan Diemer—Megan Diemer moved to allocate $75 to the painting party for Clarke Lounge. John Bennett seconded the motion. Vanessa Schmuck asked if Megan had discussed this with the RD; she has. Megan specified that this was only for the first floor lounge. Jeff Kirksey recommended that Megan contact Physical Plant about purchasing the paint because they have in the past. Motion passed 11-0-0. 

5) New Business:

a. Blitz Build — Saturday February 9 and Saturday February 23 there are groups of students going to build foundations for houses in Beaver Falls with Hosanna Ministries. On March 17-19 many more volunteers are needed to help build the actual house. 

6) Senate Update: Josh Lee gave the update. He reviewed the potential candidates for the executive staff for next year. Senate is focusing a lot of attention on policy issues, for example: parking, open hours, and chapel. A proposal for the Commons Room has been submitted to the college administration. The Union is waiting to hear how much money the college decided to allocate towards the room.   

7) Student Activities Update: Brandon Baughman gave the update. This week is “Justice Week”. The weeks events include: prayer stations set up in Skye lounge, a guest speaker Thursday night at “UpperRoom”, the rice challenge, and an open forum at City House on Saturday about justice issues and reflection. Lion King tickets go on sale Wednesday February 6. There are 50 tickets; the show is Wednesday, February 13. 

John Bennett moved to end the meeting. Conlan Walsh seconded the motion. Meeting ended at 9:58 p.m.
