Academic Program

The Semester in Rome investigates the humanities and arts through the lenses of the Reformed and Western traditions.

Academic Program:
Humanities Core    9 credits
Italian Language and Culture   3 credits
Book discussion (text will vary)   1 credit
Italian Cinema  3 credits

With the exception of Invitation to the Humanities (HUM 103) which Geneva College students must complete prior to embarking on the Semester in Rome, this curricular plan allows students to complete all of their humanities core requirements in a single semester. (There are no prerequisites for non-Geneva College students.)

The Humanities block and Italian Cinema are taught by a Geneva College faculty member who lives full-time in Rome. They employ a combination of extensive field trips, discussion and classroom instruction.

Humanities 300 is an interdisciplinary course that includes history, literature, visual art, music, architecture and philosophy. Non-Geneva students might transfer Humanities 300 back to their home institution as Western Civilization, Art History, or World Literature. Consult with your home institution for the appropriate transfer evaluation. Syllabi and course descriptions can be found here.

The three-credit Italian Language and Culture course is taught by a native Italian. In this course, students will learn practical and useful Italian.

Beyond these 12 hours (nine Humanities hours plus Italian Language & Culture), students will participate in a one-credit book discussion and the Italian Cinema course.

Field trips (including transportation and admission) are included as part of the student’s activity fee. They include, but are not limited to:

  • Colosseum
  • Palatine Hill
  • Roman Forum
  • St. Peter’s Basilica
  • Vatican Museum
  • Borghese Gallery
  • Capitoline Museum
  • Santa Maria Maggiore and many other churches throughout Rome
  • Sometimes operas and concerts are included, too!

Field trips throughout Italy are an integral part of the curriculum and include day trips and overnight excursions to Pompeii, Florence, and Venice.
