2009 Scholarship Appreciation Reception

Scholarship Appreciation Reception

To provide an opportunity for scholarship recipients to meet and thank benefactors, Geneva College hosted the annual Scholarship Appreciation Reception on April 1, 2009. Twenty-six of the college’s supporters were able to attend, and many students came to express their gratitude.

The evening began with a short performance by Geneva College’s double quartet Eight Bells. Director of Development Bob Beavin announced the scholarships and introduced the guest speakers, and Provost Ken Carson welcomed those in attendance

Scholarship donor Mrs. Lois Davie ’48 was the keynote speaker.  Mrs. Davie studied biology at Geneva and went on to teach in the Hopewell School District after receiving a graduate degree from Pennsylvania State University. Her late husband, William Davie ’47, graduated with a degree in chemistry and earned a doctorate from the University of Wisconsin. Every year, Mrs. Davie supports Geneva College’s biology and chemistry students through scholarships.

David Callahan, the student speaker of the evening, is a history major, captain of the men’s soccer team and president of the Student Athletic Advisory Council. A junior at Geneva College, David is a recipient of the Greg Thorpe Endowed Scholarship, which was established in recognition of Greg Thorpe’s devotion to his students in Apache Junction, Ariz. David lives in Phoenix.

Three new endowed scholarships were established in 2008-09 academic year. There are now a total of 133 privately funded scholarships available to Geneva College students.
