October 29, 2008

Tom Pyle called the meeting to order at 6:31 p.m. and asked for prayer requests. Doug Miller opened in prayer. Kaylee Wherry was absent and Ben Potter was her replacement.

I) Announcements

Kelly DeFilippo moved to pass the minutes from October 22, 2008. Ashley Luciano seconded the motion. Motion passed 11-0-0.

II) Class Updates

a) Freshman – Micah Yarger gave the update. The class is still waiting for a time slot to meet with Nancy Graham. They presented pictures of the courtyard furniture to Senate. As far as providing students with the sugar and fat content in food in the Brig and Alex’s, Clayton would like to see a very specific nutritional chart. Jonathon Deeks is trying to get more information.

b) Sophomores – Ted Northrop gave the update. During their meeting, the class continued to work on their Splash Lagoon event and brought a sample of their advertisement. In order to promote the class event to Splash Lagoon, they will do mail box stuffers, an email, and will place flyers up around campus. They will also have sign-ups outside of Alex’s. They have scheduled a meeting with Paul Perrine on October 30 to discuss creating an online survey for open hours.

c) Juniors – Doug Miller gave the update. In their meeting, they decided they will need to change the location of their class event. Instead of ice skating at Brady’s Run, they will be having a movie night along with food in Skye Lounge. The date is still to be determined. They also discussed their charity event and would like to give the money that is raised to World Vision. They are waiting for prices on their class t-shirts. The class also discussed their idea to have a Homeless Awareness event.

d) Seniors – Kelly DeFilippo gave the update. The Seniors want to contact Penn Dot about a putting a Geneva sign on the turnpike. Jeff Kirksey suggested that they speak with Cheryl Johnston from PR about contacting Penn Dot. For a Senior Class event, they would like to go ice skating at PPG in Pittsburgh.

There was a discussion about “Our Town.” There is a concern for a lack of participation for the community service day. The food committee will need to know how much food to order by Friday, based upon the sign-ups. Katherine Bull said that the RC’s could go door to door in their buildings to promote “Our Town” sign ups.

Courtney Baughman said she has contacted Wal-Mart to get plastic bags for a food drive, but this idea may need to be postponed until next semester because she has not heard back from them. Jeff Kirksey suggested that Courtney could ask for bags from the Geneva Bookstore.

Tom Pyle asked all “Our Town” participants to show up in Skye Lounge on Saturday, November 1 at 8:15 a.m.

III) Residential Council Update

Katherine Bull gave the update. The Commuter RC, David Gettemy, is providing donuts and drinks for fellow commuters in the Underground on October 31.  Also, participation in “Our Town” is mandatory for all RC’s.

IV) Student Activities Update –

Ben Potter gave the update. “The Game” went smoothly and the Student Activities staff has been receiving positive feedback. There were 15 teams of at least 5 people. Student Activities made slight changes to “The Game” this year to make it more interesting. “Midnight Madness” (the kick off to basketball season) will be held on October 31 at 11:30 p.m. Five Senators will be helping with Midnight Madness. In this week’s executive staff meeting, the idea of having a Christmas party for Half.Past.Nine was discussed and the Senate advocated this event. The Jamaica mission’s team would like to couple this Half.Past.Nine with a “Beard-Off” to raise funds for their trip for a fundraiser but Senate was not an advocate of this idea.

V) Committee Updates

Chapel Committee – Ted Northrop: There was discussion about switching the set up (seating) in chapel, and this change will probably occur on the last week. The committee has looked at attendance records from prior years and the numbers drop drastically at the end of the semester. There was good feedback about the new arrangements of the Psalms. It is important that the Chapel Committee receive feedback, suggestions, or affirmations about specific chapel issues if changes are to be made.

Budget Committee – Kathleen Bolton: The Budget Committee discussed the proposal for the Sophomore class event to Splash Lagoon and approved the funding for the event. Kathleen Bolton moved that the Budget Committee recommends the allocation of $1,181.00 to the sophomore class with all unused funds being returned to the GCSU. Mariel Friedberg seconded the motion. Motion passed 10-0-0.

VI) New Business

“Our Town Food Committee Proposal” – Food will be provided for the participants of “Our Town” on November 1, 2008. Breakfast: 10 dozen Oram’s donuts (approximately $10/doz) along with juice = $150.00. Lunch: Sub Palace subs ($5.00), soft drinks, and cookies = $750.00. The total needed for the food for all Our Town participants is $900.00. Ted Northrop moved to allocate $900.00 towards buying food for Our Town, and also moved that this bypass Budget Committee, because Our Town is this week. All unused funds will be returned to the GCSU. Rachel Long seconded the motion. Motion passed 10-0-0.

Plastic Cups in the Brig - Jeff Kirksey discussed with Senate the idea of purchasing and using new plastic cups in the Brig, and brought in three samples of plastic cups for Senate to see. Each cup can come in any variety of color and would include a lid. The Brig goes through about six cases of Styrofoam cups each week, equaling approximately 6,000 cups per week. Styrofoam would still be provided in the Brig but the purpose of the plastic is to reduce the use of Styrofoam. Up to $1,500.00 would end up being spent on new plastic cups. Funding would come from Alex’s, Senate, and through profit from actual cup sales. There was a suggestion to look into a travel mug style of cup, versus a stadium cup.

Doug Miller motioned to end the meeting. Kelly DeFilippo seconded the motion. Meeting ended at 7:23 p.m.
