State grant challenges Geneva’s alumni

veon.jpgState Representative Mike Veon presented Geneva College with a $1 million matching grant October 7 as the college officially launched its Beyond the Bend fundraising drive.

The state grant is dedicated to improvements in Reeves Stadium, which will include an artificial turf playing surface, new bleachers, restrooms, ticket booths, and concessions stands, and a new press box.

"We can’t rest easy yet," says Sam Siple, vice president of institutional advancement. "The college is required to raise $1 million to match the state funding. Unless our alumni support the project generously, we won’t receive it."

The college began the public phase of Beyond the Bend ~ Making the Path Straight with a kickoff celebration during homecoming weekend. Beyond the Bend will remake campus following the relocation of Route 18. Geneva needs to raise at least $5.7 million to fund the campus improvements.

Because the highway will no longer run alongside the stadium wall, this is the first chance Geneva has had to make the renovations needed, Siple says.
