Revision 3, May 18, 2004
Attention Resident Students,
In an effort to provide all resident students equal access to Internet resources, the Geneva College Administration has approved the following changes:
1.) Geneva’s connection to the Internet will increase this year from 6 megabits per second to 9 megabits per second. Student connections are allocated 83% of the Internet bandwidth for their use, so bandwidth available to students will increase from 5.2 megabits per second to 7.5 megabits per second.
2.) Internet connectivity from the campus network will be provided to the Schoolhouse, Kerr, Patterson, and Kessler.
3.) Kerr is already wired for Ethernet. As in the other residence halls, students will be required to purchase their own Ethernet card and any standard Ethernet card can be used. Students must apply for an account to use the connection.
4.) Wireless will be installed for use in Schoolhouse, Patterson, and Kessler. As in Clarke, Young, Geneva Arms, Skye Lounge and Alexander Hall, any standard 802.11b wireless card can be used, students must buy their own card, and students must apply for an account.
5.) The college will provide an Internet connection from a third party for Nellis, McCreary, Montegazzi, and Hardies. The college will pay for the Internet connection. Wireless will be used in these houses and students will be required to buy their own wireless cards. Students in these houses will have to use wireless and will not be eligible to use the campus dial-up system.
6.) Cable modems (and DSL) are a security risk to the student networks in the residence halls and to the general campus network. Cable modems (and DSL connections) will no longer be permitted in Young, Geneva Arms, Schoolhouse, and Kerr, or any other College-owned house used to house students.
7.) Dial up connections to Internet Service Providers other than Geneva are a security risk to the student networks in the residence halls and to the general campus network. Use of dial-up Internet Service Providers other than Geneva is not permitted in any residence hall or College-owned house used to house students.
