Instructions for Setting Up Wireless Connectivity

Before beginning these instructions, there are a couple of assumptions that are made. They are:

  1. You have an 802.11b or 802.11g (with 802.11b compatibility) wireless card installed and working on you computer. (Check the Device Manager under the System Control Panel to see if there are any devices with yellow warming icons, or a red disabled "x" on them. You need to remedy any of these types of conditions before the instructions below will work.) 802.11a and other forms of wireless such as Bluetooth and Ir (infrared) will NOT work.
  2. You have already submitted your MAC address, username and password, per the instructions for signing up for a wireless account.
  3. If you are using Windows 2000 or XP, do not install the Client Manager software that came with your network card (if any actually did). We use the Windows Client Manager, as it is universal, and more reliable under most conditions.
  4. If you are having trouble, or are unsure whether your machine is properly prepared to be connected to Geneva's network, please call Tech Services at x4357 (H-E-L-P) and we will assist you in getting your computer ready to go.

Windows 2000/XP

  1. Go to Start -> Control Panel. If your machine is configured to use the newer XP view of the control panels, click on "Switch to Classic View" in the upper left corner of the control panel window
  2. Double click on the Network Connections icon
  3. You should have a Wireless Connection icon. If you don't, you need to go back and check that your wireless card is properly installed, and enabled, before you can progress further.
  4. Right click on the Wireless Connection and choose Properties.
  5. Click on the Wireless Networks tab.
  6. Make sure the check box labeled "Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings" is checked.
  7. Click the Add button at the bottom of the window.
  8. Type "GENEVACOLLEGE" (without the quotes) into the SSID
  9. Set the Network Authentication to "Open"
  10. Set Data Encryption to "Disabled"

  15. Click Next
  16. Select "Connect to the network at my workplace" and click Next

  18. Type "Geneva College" as the Company name and click Next
  19. Type "63.172.28.21" as the Host IP Address and click Next
  20. Check the box to add a shortcut to the desktop and click Finish.
  21. Type in your username and password and click Connect. Tech Services strongly recommends that you do NOT check the "Save Password" check box, as this presents a very easy way for others to abuse your login information.
